Mission Critical is the book written by award-winning educator and writer Eric A. Combs, in which he shares his experiences and frustrations from within the American public school system.
He recounts riveting stories as a successful military Senior Non-Commissioned Officer who retires from the service and enters the challenging world of public education. Combs discovers a dangerously-broken system, barely held together by hard-working teachers, parents, and administrators.
These frustrated factions must work together, dealing with the constant ebb and flow of unpredictable political whims while, at the same time, providing a challenging and rewarding education for the leaders of tomorrow.

During his 20 year career in the United States Air Force, Sergeant Combs served as Security Forces Superintendent and special tactics instructor. He has been stationed in South Korea, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Germany, England and several bases in the US. Sergeant Combs has also been deployed to engagements in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. He was the 1992 Non-commissioned Officer of the Year for USAF in Europe and served as a tactical evaluator and trainer with the British Special Air Service.
Upon retiring, Combs became an Air Force Junior ROTC instructor and attended the University of Dayton with the Troops to Teachers program for his Adolescent to Young Adult 7-12 Social Studies License. He has taught World History, Economics, Ancient History and government and worked as a team member for Team Delta, a ‘School within a School’ program for at-risk 9th graders. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at Wright State University and Antioch University Midwest.
He is currently a consultant and Program Developer and National Trainer for the Time to Teach Program at the Center for Teacher Effectiveness.
Mr. Combs has been honored in Who’s Who Among American Teacher’s for four years and is an active outdoor instructor for high ropes, climbing, rappelling and survival for several organizations. He holds 3 associate degrees, a Bachelors degree in Forensic Anthropology in addition to Masters degrees in Education from the University of Dayton and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Antioch University Midwest. Eric was selected as the 2006 Ohio Teacher of the Year and a finalist as the 2013 Assistant Principal of the year for Ohio. He is an active member of the National State Teachers of the Year organization.
Mr. Combs is married and lives in Ohio.

Jan 2022 – Planning meetings – Will be working with a large school district in Finland to bring Classroom Management and Student Engagement to their school and then to Finnish schools nation-wide!
March – 2022 CSEA Conference – California Para-Pros will have a state-wide conference and I am so happy to be able to work with them virtually. We will be talking about Student Engagement and School Safety during the Conference March 7 – 9, 2022!
June 2022 – I will be travelling to Colorado to work with the NE BOCES Districts on Classroom Management and Student Engagement.
